From the South of France to China: a SKEMA student’s academic journey across four continents

From the French Riviera to China, via South Africa, the United States and Brazil, Mélissa Martin has turned international mobility into both a learning tool and a personal growth accelerator. Now in the final stage of her studies on SKEMA Business School’s Suzhou campus, the Master in Management student is completing a double degree with the MSc in International Marketing & Business Development.
Why did you choose to study in Suzhou?
Back in prep school, I was already fascinated by the fact that SKEMA had a campus in China. Among all the business schools I considered, it was the one offering the strongest international reach, with campuses across several continents. What really convinced me was Suzhou itself. I’ve always been curious about Chinese culture and wanted to explore it first-hand.
What has your experience in Suzhou been like?
It’s been exceptional. I was instantly charmed by the city. I live just next to the campus—everything is accessible, public transport is efficient, and daily life is smooth. It’s a safe city, and the food is delicious, affordable and incredibly varied. I was also surprised to find how open and free life is here—just like in France or the US. You can go out with friends, join events, and enjoy student life to the fullest.
What did you think of the campus and your fellow students?
It’s a truly international environment. We study and collaborate in diverse teams, and we learn from each other’s backgrounds. Suzhou is rich in history and culture, and I was especially moved by the traditional Chinese gardens—their elegance and harmony with nature left a lasting impression on me.
You’ve studied on multiple SKEMA campuses. What stands out from this global academic journey?
I’ve had the chance to study in Sophia Antipolis, Raleigh, Stellenbosch, Belo Horizonte and Suzhou. Each location has changed my perspective. I’ve learned to adapt, work in multicultural teams and communicate in several languages. And I’ve always felt supported—whether it was with visa applications, housing or practical advice. In total, I’ve studied on four continents: Europe, America, Africa and Asia. That diversity has shaped who I am today.
Learning at SKEMA also happens outside the classroom. What hands-on experiences have made an impact?
In Brazil, I took part in the Digital Sales Challenge, working with local companies on digital marketing strategies. We presented our recommendations to executives—it was intense, but incredibly rewarding. I’ve also had internships abroad: at Carrefour in France, working on multilingual packaging; and at Lactalis in Singapore, conducting market research and supporting product launches across Asia.
What direction do you see your career taking?
I aim to join a global company in the consumer goods or luxury sector. I’m looking for a role that combines brand strategy, international development and communication. I want to keep growing in multicultural environments. For me, all these experiences form a solid foundation for building a committed and ambitious global career.
